When Julius Reubke wrote his two powerful sonatas he was already terminally ill. This “charming and respectable young man”, as his teacher Franz Liszt described him, was only 24 years old. His Piano Sonata is original, expressive and virtuosic. With his Sonata on the 94th Psalm, Reubke composed a key work of the German romantic organ repertoire which transferred the principle of the symphonic poem to the organ. It was premiered by the composer himself in 1857 on what was then the largest instrument in German-speaking countries, the Ladegast organ in Merseburg Cathedral.
