About the programme

“You are the light of the world.” These words of Jesus stand as an invitation at the centre of the impressive sacred oratorio by north German composer Neithard Bethke. Starting with the opening words of the Latin mass of the dead “Lux Aeterna”, he sets texts by the prophets, baroque mystics and contemporary poets which feature the “eternal light” in their content. The composition stretched over ten years, and it has been another ten years until the large-scale, opulently-scored work can now finally receive its premiere.
