Zum Programm

“Without music, life would be a mistake.” His aphorism shows how highly Friedrich Nietzsche regarded music. The philosopher even composed music himself. He himself called the “Hymnus an das Leben” [Hymn to Life], his last and only published composition, “a kind of profession of faith in music”. Johannes Brahms set the famous poem of Hölderlin in his “Schicksalslied” [Song of Destiny], whereas “Nänie” is based on a song of lament by Schiller. As in his Requiem, here Brahms creates a connection between mourning and consolation in an incomparable way.
